Program Description:

During this session, the facilitator will describe the value of engaging in an intentional journey to create equitable and inclusive learning environments. Positive behavior intervention and supports (PBIS), steeped in the concept of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), is a framework centered in prevention and the development of healthy school climates. While this framework is evidence-based and longstanding, schools are still seeing disproportionate outcomes in disciplinary practices, students and staff who are not experiencing the climate in the same way as their peers, or have abandoned the framework altogether. The presenter will discuss teaming, evaluation, intentionality around equitable data-based decision making and the engagement of families and communities.

This workshop addresses the following NASP practice model domains: Domain 1: Data-Based Decision Making; Domain 2: Consultation and Collaboration; Domain 3: Academic Interventions and Instructional Supports; Domain 4: Interventions and Mental Health Services to Develop Social and Life Skills; Domain 5: School-Wide Services to Promote Safe and Supportive Schools; Domain 6: Preventive and Responsive Services; Domain 7: Family, School, and Community Collaboration; Domain 8: Diversity in Development and Learning

Learning Objectives:

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

1. describe the value of embedding equity, inclusion and belonging in tiered systems of support

2. evaluate their current practices and how to create tiers of support that reduce disproportionality

3. describe how school psychologists can serve as change agents to transform educational systems

Nikole Y. Hollins-Sims, Ed.D., is the senior educational consultant & strategist for Hollins-Sims Consultation. She formerly served as a technical assistance coordinator for the Midwest PBIS network and is a former Special Assistant to the Secretary of Education at the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Additionally, Dr. Hollins-Sims has previously served as an educational consultant for the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN), where she was the co-statewide lead for the Learning Environment & Engagement initiative. She is a Pennsylvania certified school psychologist and has conducted research around caregivers of children of incarcerated parents and their motivation to engage in family-school partnerships. Dr. Hollins-Sims has been awarded as a Moral and Courageous Leader for Education by Cabrini University in 2021, the 2021 American Psychology Association (APA) Anti-Racism School Psychology Emerging Professional Award and was named the 2021 Pennsylvania School Psychologist of the Year. She has also been honored with the Gateway to Equity Award by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) – Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Chapter. One of her career highlights is serving as the lead author of the book titled: Creating Equitable Practices in PBIS.

INFORMATION AND DIRECTIONS

This webinar will be one of two webinars that will take place this spring in place of our traditional in-person MSPA Spring Conference event.

The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and hence the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists recognize MSPA as an approved provider of Continuing Professional Development/Continuing Education (CPD/CE) for psychologists (NASP APS #1002). MSPA maintains responsibility for the program. Documentation of attendance for 2 hours of CPD/CE credit will be provided to certified school psychologists and licensed psychologists who attend the entire workshop and complete an evaluation form. Partial credit cannot be awarded. In order to receive CPD/CE credit, attendees must join the webinar no later than 15 minutes after the start, and may not leave prior to 15 minutes before the end. Attendee join and leave times will be tracked to confirm full attendance. Additionally, webinar attendees must respond to at least two of three polls presented during the webinar. Following the workshop, attendance and poll records will be verified and webinar attendees who have met the attendance criteria described will be emailed a link no later than noon on Monday, April 8, 2024 to complete the evaluation form, which must be completed by April 21, 2024. After submitting that form, the attendee will receive the CPD/CE certificate.

MSPA does not offer a group registration rate however, employers who register a group of 10 or more will receive 1 complimentary registration.
