MSPA Statement: Title IX Proposed Changes

October 26, 2018

The Maryland School Psychologists’ Association (MSPA) is disturbed by recent reports that the Trump Administration is currently considering policy changes that would infringe on the civil rights of transgender individuals.  The current proposal would reportedly redefine sex under Title IX as only and permanently male or female, as assigned at birth.  MSPA joins with other organizations representing mental health providers, including the American Psychological Association (APA), the Maryland Psychological Association (MPA), and the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), in condemning this proposed policy as it would be harmful to the approximately two million individuals who identify as transgender in this country.

MSPA and its member school psychologists support policies and practices that ensure the safety and well-being of all students, including those who identify as transgender.  Resources related to supporting LGBTQ+ students can be found on the NASP website at the following link: http://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources/diversity/lgbtq-youth/transgender-youth
